About Mr. Lodge

Mr. Chris Lodge is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in York, specialising in hip and knee replacement surgery across the full spectrum โ€” from straightforward primary arthroplasty through to some of the most complex revision, re-revision and reconstruction procedures undertaken in the UK.

After graduating in medicine from Newcastle University in 2011, Mr. Lodge completed his core surgical and orthopaedic specialty training within the Yorkshire Deanery โ€” one of the largest and most respected orthopaedic training programmes in the country. He developed a particular interest in arthroplasty surgery during his registrar years and pursued this through two dedicated specialist fellowships at leading UK centres before being appointed as a substantive consultant at York Teaching Hospital in February 2023.

Mr. Lodge sees patients both on the NHS at York Teaching Hospital and privately at Nuffield Health York Hospital and Ramsay Clifton Park Hospital. He believes strongly that every patient deserves a clear, honest and evidence-based assessment of their condition and the options available to them โ€” and takes the time at every consultation to ensure that understanding is genuinely achieved before any treatment decision is made.

Specialist Fellowship Training

Mr. Lodge completed two dedicated post-CCT fellowships at nationally recognised specialist centres, each focused on a specific and complementary area of advanced arthroplasty practice.

Nottingham City Hospital

Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham

Mr. Lee Jeys  ยท  Mr. Jonathan Stevenson  ยท  Mr. Mike Parry

Specialist fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital โ€” the UK's pre-eminent specialist orthopaedic centre โ€” with a focus on metastatic bone disease, megaprosthetic limb salvage reconstruction and periprosthetic joint infection. This fellowship gave Mr. Lodge unique exposure to some of the most complex reconstruction surgery performed in the UK, directly informing his current subspecialty practice in revision arthroplasty, PJI and megaprosthetics.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham is a national and international referral centre for complex bone and joint pathology. Training there under Mr. Jeys, Mr. Stevenson and Mr. Parry โ€” three surgeons of international reputation in their respective subspecialties โ€” provided Mr. Lodge with a level of exposure to complex revision and reconstruction surgery that is available at very few centres in the country.

Areas of Specialist Practice

Mr. Lodge's clinical practice spans the full range of hip and knee arthroplasty โ€” from straightforward primary joint replacement through to some of the most technically demanding revision and reconstruction procedures performed in the Yorkshire region.

Education & Surgical Training

Mr. Lodge is committed to the education and development of the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons, reflecting the investment that his own trainers and fellowship supervisors made in his development.

He is an active trainer within the Yorkshire Deanery orthopaedic training programme, supervising specialty registrars in both elective arthroplasty and trauma surgery at York Teaching Hospital. He also provides training and supervision for more junior surgical trainees โ€” core surgical trainees and foundation doctors โ€” rotating through the orthopaedic department.

Mr. Lodge believes that a culture of teaching within a surgical unit raises the quality of care for all patients โ€” not just those under training supervision โ€” by fostering a reflective, evidence-based and quality-conscious approach to every clinical decision.

Beyond Surgery

Outside of his clinical and academic commitments, Mr. Lodge's time is largely devoted to his family. He believes that the balance between a demanding surgical career and a full personal life is not merely desirable but essential โ€” both for sustained performance and for the perspective and human understanding that makes a good clinician.
