Providing specialist orthopaedic care with a focus on hip and knee replacement and revision hip and knee surgery. Committed to giving every patient the highest quality treatment and information to help them make confident decisions about their care.
This UK multicentre RCT randomised 339 patients across ten hospitals to either robotic-arm-assisted (Mako) or conventional total knee replacement, finding no clinically meaningful difference in the Forgotten Joint Score at 12 months (49.2 vs. 50.2; p=0.62). Whilst robotic surgery achieved greater alignment precision, this did not translate into improved patient-reported outcomes, pain scores, or walking ability at one year. Robotic surgery added approximately 10.5 minutes of operating time and £950 in cost, and was not cost-effective under current NHS thresholds. Longer-term follow-up to ten years is ongoing. The trial provides the strongest evidence to date that robotic assistance does not improve short-term patient outcomes in primary knee replacement.
